Sarah says: I thought that the first time I'd ever EVER heard of Travis was on a train somewhere in Italy , this past January, when I was having one of those wanderlust phases and got on a plane and left for Europe. So the AA batteries on my walkman were running low (and I was sick of the 1/2 of tape that I had dubbed a few faves on before I left), and I didn't have any money to buy new ones (nothing new there)- so I started listening to the radio. I caught almost of all of what turned out to be "Writing to Reach You", although all that I caught after the song (it was Italian, I speak Spanish) was the name Travis. I promptly fell asleep and forgot about it. Flash forward about two months, and I'm sitting at home with pneumonia, unable to sleep (I never sleep anyways). I'm not studying, either... just sitting there, thinking to myself... hmmm... I have $15... in... cash. I decide to trudge to the Exclusive Co. (it's a Madison, WI thing) and buy some random album. Under employee favorites, someone lists Travis' The Man Who. A lightbulb goes off in my head... I must get this album... I've been a devotee ever since. Well, a closet devotee, because I have to expose my friends to my music slowly so as not to incite a, "What the heck is this?!" reaction. However, I now have a small but fierce band of fan friends who are going to attempt to squeeze into a small s*** box on wheels car and drive to Chicago and see them in September.

That is WHAT I THOUGHT was my first exposure to Travis. Actually, I was previously exposed to them when they openned for BFF (Ben Folds Five)... only, I only HEARD them. I was there with a few friends, some of them longtime members of the BFF fan club. We were drinking long before the show started, and well, I have absolutely no tolerance. Zero. Zip. I was drunk out of my gourd, and well, spent Travis' set in the bathroom. Poor me, I could have been a convert right from the start. Instead, it took me a couple of years to figure out what I was missing.
