Ruthie remembers: I'm a recent convert. Quite virginal compared to you folks.I bought The Man Who after being completely fascinated by Fran's performance in the video for "Turn" - wittering on as he does about his "chi" and making out he can do press-ups for 12 hrs non-stop. I thought, "This guy is mental," which is as good a reason as any I've had recently for buying music. Anyway....I played it once and thought this is actually pretty good. Played it again and thought this is pretty damn amazing. Then they got inside my head and under my skin and I was lost. This album makes you cry and smile at the same time. It is the best thing I have ever heard. It seems to speak to folk on so many different levels.
I scoured the net for tour dates thinking glaswegian band, bound to be playing locally and was gutted to find that Brixton was the nearest venue. I wouldn't go to Brixton if I'd had an engraved invitation so I flitted of to Paris instead, last Friday (5 Nov 99), to watch them play some obscure and completely unpronounceable French rock festival at a tiny club in Montmatre. It was fantastic, despite the fact that at one point Fran had to stop mid-song to tell the crowd to shut up. The French weren't that impressed but what the hell do they know. They got excited when the guy from Dex's Midnight Runners sang "The Greatest Love of All"--just about the most nauseating thing I have ever seen in my life, though Fran was incredibly gracious about him. I just kept thinking, these guys do not belong in this dive. Mind-blowingly talented and yet still so unassuming. I hope they retain that through the huge success that will inevitably be theirs for many years to come.
And I'll be there....
