(Good) Feeling

Nicole telepathises: Hi, my name is Nicole Conover, I'm 14 years old, and I live in North Carolina, USA. My story about how I became a Travis fan is quite an interesting one.

I was previously an Oasis fan (still am, but it's died down a bit) and was looking for something new. I had been reading reviews and hearing things in magazines about this band named Travis, who were poised to become the "Next Big Thing" out of the UK. My eyebrows raised but I didn't really pay much mind, 'cause I'd never heard of them.

Flash forward about a month or so. I'm sitting on my bed at 5:30 on a Thursday morning watching MTV while I was getting ready for school. The "Buzzworthy" logo thingy appeared on the screen, and lo and behold, the video was the one for "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" I thought to myself, isn't that the band touring with Oasis, and who's supposed to be the Next Big Thing, etc. So I decide to scoot closer to the TV and check these guys out. Wow, was I in for a surprise. Not only was Travis the best band I'd heard in ages, but the song was great, and I knew I had to have the CD. I kept my eyes peeled for the video Friday (ok, I'll admit it, watching Fran jump off a cliff in a kilt was a nice bonus). Having only heard the song once, and singing the parts I could remember all day Thursday and Friday, I knew I had to get the CD.

I went to the mall that Saturday afternoon and went to the CD store. I found a copy of The Man Who and brought it to my mum to pay for. She asked me, "Who's Travis?" and I said, "They're this English band, I heard one of their songs on MTV two days ago. It was really good, and the CD is supposed to be excellent." She didn't question me, since I had made impulse buys before (i.e., buying Definitely Maybe without ever having heard a song on there) and my instincts were usually right. I went home and immediately put the CD in my CD player.

Listening to the CD, I could tell that all those reviews had been right, and I was hooked by the end of the last track. I was glad I had gotten a head start on everyone else and bought the CD well before everyone else here. Travis became my favorite band (an honor for anyone who knows me), and I listened to the whole CD straight through every day for about a week and woke up at 5:00 every morning just so I could watch MTV and VH1 and keep my eyes peeled for the video.

So that's my story. It may not be as extraordinary as some fan stories out there, but it is definitely a bit unusual. Now pictures of Fran hang on the wall side by side with my pictures of Liam (can perfection be defined any better than these two?). The day I discovered Travis will live in infamy (for me anyway) and I am glad I decided to listen to my instincts when it came to picking good music.
