| Embrace | Travis | Ultrasound |
Melody Maker
Travis are radio-friendly, almost ridiculously conformist in comparison,
after Ultrasound, they're DLT. But fortunately a band in possession of such an
impressive armoury of top-hole pop tunes and boasting The Best Voice in Rock are
never gonna find it hard making friends. They bring the comewhat dumb-struck and
shell-shocked in the crowd back to life. Travis are introduced as "specialising
in good feelings"; this they may do, but when they slide smoothly from the
Simon and Garfunkel-esque "Not Anymore" ["More Than Us," methinks--Uyen] to the AC/DC-style pomp of "All
I Wanna Do Is Rock" with the same grin, you're aware that any sense of
security Travis engender is likely false. Their smooth waters seem shallow at
first glance, but they have depths of Lake Titicaca proportions. Fran's
charismatic, winning half-smirk (the one he shares with Jon Bon Jovi)
accompanies everything they do (does this make him a chain-smirker?) and implies
he knows things you don't. Like just how good Travis are.
