| Meeting |
Michelle muses: Well, I went to go see Travis perform at Music Midtown in Atlanta, GA. They were there along with Oasis. My friend and I got there super early so we could grab a front row stance (it was an outdoor concert). We ran to stage and grabbed a hold of the railing. As we were waiting for the fun to begin, I see three handsome young men walk out from the backstage area....Dougie, Neil, and Andy! This was before WDIAROM was even out, so NOBODY recognized them, except me, of course. So I began to approach them. Dougie noticed me, and I gave him a wave. He kinda nodded to the other guys pointing me out... like "look, here comes a fan." We slowly walked towards each other, all the while Dougie giving me such a sweet smile that I thought I would melt. When we finally met, all I could think to say was "Travis! I love you guys!" Dougie said, "Thanks," and I shook all their hands...So, you ask, where was Fran? WELL
About half an hour later, I catch him talking to a fan behind the fence that separated us from backstage. I walked over and waited my turn to talk, but he noticed me first. "Hello, how are you?" Fran asked me politely and shook my hand. We talked a bit about how nice the weather was, how I was so happy to see them in Atlanta, etc. A friend of mine from Philly requested that I mention her if I ever meet Fran. So I told him, "I was supposed to warn you that when you go to Philly, this girl is going to attack you." He laughed and said something like "Oh dear." I went on.
"Yeah, she wants to ask you about Nigel I think."
"Nigel Godrich?"
"Yeah." He nods, then stops and looks up.
"Why?"
"Well, she likes Radiohead a lot too.. so there's that connection. For some reason, I remember her wanting to know if he's hairy."
At this point this roadie guy standing by starts making fun of me. "What? How random! What stupid question." But Fran stops him.
"No! It's true! It's true! The man has hair coming out everywhere! We noticed as we were recording. I mean, I'm a pretty hairy guy myself." (At this point he lifts up his pant leg to reveal his leg hair. I am on the ground laughing my arse off.) "In fact, we were comparing in the studio...and he much more than me."
It was hilarious. After asking him to sign my CD and taking a picture with him (I wouldn't let this opportunity pass like when the others walk by, I made sure to go the whole 9 yards), I asked how Oasis was treating them.
"Wonderful. This tour has been amazing, and they're the nicest guys you could hope to meet." I thought he was joking, but he was really dead serious. So that's nice to hear Travis and Oasis have gotten along so well.
He then said he had to go get ready before they went on and he went backstage. Somehow I got back in front for the whole show, right in front of Dougie who, by the way, gave me a wink when he came on stage. I even managed to stay up front for Oasis's performance until the crowd got rough and I was pulled out...but that's another story.
All in all, Travis was incredibly charming and wonderful. I hope to run into them again sometime in the future..
p.s. My friend in philly ended up meeting them too...they continued discussing Nigel's hairiness there :)
