The Song Is Back
In all honesty, Travis's The Man Who, which just came out in the United States, is the best album I've heard in years. Though the Glasgow band has been endlessly compared to Radiohead, they're actually not as dark. They're more in the tradition of the Smiths with Scottish overtones. At Travis's live show, packed-in audience members sing every verse. According to bassist Dougie Payne, here's the U.K.'s number-one band in a nutshell: "Neil the drummer is strong and silent. Andy the guitarist is wee, clever, and funny. Fran Healy, the lead singer and songwriter, is funny and intense. And I'm lanky." They met randomly through various art-school connections. And in 1997 they released their first album, Good Feeling. "I was born in a maternity hospital called Rotten Row," jokes Dougie. "The good thing is, I always used to think it was called Rock 'n' Roll." These days, even Paul McCartney is feeling Travis, who were named for a character in Wim Wenders's Paris, Texas. Paul got onstage with the band last year. "I'm a ridiculously big Beatles fan," says Dougie. "I could actually see the back of his head."
