What did you think when it started raining during "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?" at Glastonbury last year?
When it started raining last year, I just thought, Oh shit. I felt really bad: everyone was soaked and kind of looking at me as if it was our fault!

There's a bit of a difference in where you are on the bill this year.
Totally man. For fuck's sake! Travis headlining Glastonbury! That's a bit of a coup, do you know what I mean? It's a bit of a mad turnaround in the story.

Have you thought about the set yet?
We were just thinking about what we're going to do. The set we're going to do is something like an hour and a quarter, an hour and a half. We're going to try and get a nice light show, not your usual boring swirly lights. And we're just going to play…well. That's the mad thing, do you know what I mean? My head is not in I'm-a-big-fucking-rock-star mode. I just don't think we are. I don't think we will ever be, no matter how much people try and make us into that. It's not even a stubborn thing. It's just like, we're on tour here in the States with Oasis and they're fucking rock stars, do you know what I mean? They walk onstage and it's like, Fuck! It's maybe slightly more subtle with us, but as Liam said, we don't have that "Woooooargh!"

So you do agree with him there, then?
Absolutely. For fuck's sake, Liam's only pointing out the fucking obvious. But with us and our songs, it's more about you and who's listening to it than it is about the band that's playing it. It's about everyone rather than the band. We don't really rely on us.

So you've no hankering to be an icon of any description?
Nah. I might have a daft haircut but I'm not by any means an icon.

Have you got any new songs finished?
As far as I can see, we've got about five or six songs that could be singles. But there's another four or whatever that are sort of out there but are too long. The backlog isn't that big, and I need to work out a load of other ones.

How do you feel about being played on Radio 2?
They've played our stuff to death, man! I thought that was brilliant. At the end of the day, you're just trying to get that song out to as many people as possible. I'm not really fussy about what radio station does that.

So do you know anyone in Britain who doesn't like The Man Who?
I don't know, I know people who don't like the band. I don't blame them, do you know what I mean? 'Cos we don't really fulfill that thing, you know, it's that "woooooargh" thing we were talking about that British bands have to fulfill. There's probably loads of people who hate The Man Who, but I think 90 percent of the people of Britain really don't give a fuck. They buy two records a year, just like me, and listen to the radio and sing the tunes, and they don't know whether it's Richard Ashcroft or Travis. They just like singing in the bath or in the car on the way to work. And in that way, The Man Who kind of fulfilled its little thing. It's cool, though, because it feels a wee bit like we managed to smuggle quite a good record into a lot of homes.

So have you thought about how you could possibly start the Travis backlash?
I suppose if our next record's not as good, it'll start. And it'll start anyway when you bring out another record. Because when we brought out The Man Who, most of the critics didn't like it. I think you've got to be a brave fucking person to go, This is actually good, if it's not what you're expecting. I think everyone was expecting us to do another rock album. And they didn't get that. I think if you're expecting the next record to be another The Man Who, then you'll be disappointed.

So what about a return to rock?
See, the thing is that I never concern myself with what it sounds like. I'm just like, Does it have a fearless melody? And I don't give a fuck whether it sounds like Al Green or fucking Steps or whatever. I stopped giving a fuck a long time ago. I just care about melody, and I care about fearlessness in that melody. That's what the next record will have. I hope it'll sound totally different from The Man Who. What's the point, once you've found your toadstool, just sitting on it? I want to jump about this pond!
