logo It's been 12 months of Macca, "pastry cuts," and seducing Julia Roberts for Britain's loveliest band. Mrs. Fran Healy, Nora Kryst, was there, snapping away for Q. Hurrah.

wings over america Sing, Sing, Sing: Fran Meets the Beatle
Dougie Payne: This is the only time I've ever been insanely jealous of Frannie. I was standing at the back and completely green.
Fran Healy: We did the Elvis song, "Let's Have a Party," and Paul stepped all over my lines during the song. He came up to do my verse, and I backed off, and he backed off, and at that point, all the words went out of my head. He was really apologetic afterwards. He's the fucking don, that guy. He's so easy to get on with. It was amazing.

about face "Shoulders Back, Healy, You 'Orrible Little Man!"
Payne: That was taken at the Depot Studios in London. We were doing a photo shoot--in fact, we were doing a whole load of photo shoots that day--and it was taken when we were rehearsing for the Dido tour and our European tour this year. I don't think Fran was looking away deliberately there, but you know, he's easily distracted. Nora probably caught his eye, and he couldn't help looking away. He's just not focused enough, that boy.

road trip "We're All Going on a Summer Holiday!"
Payne: There was a girl who used to come along and photograph us quite a lot, and she bought this camper van down to the Depot. It was on its last legs, and I don't think it would've started up again if we'd have tried to drive off in it.
Andy Dunlop: She came out when we were in Chicago, as well. She's a nice girl.
Payne: I always wanted a camper van.

grrrrr! "Behind You, Nigel. It's the Radiohead Bears!"
Dunlop: There's real concentration there, Nigel [Godrich]'s always focused.
Payne: ...and me and Fran are just tormenting him like a couple of kids.
Healy: [laughs] He doesn't know we're doing that. He'll always sit like that and grind his jaw when he's working. He's a fantastic producer. That's the perfect example of us working with Nigel. We like to wind him up.

"Eeeeeeeeeeek!"
singing Neil Primrose: That was our gig at Dublin. It was the first time we'd played the songs from The Invisible Band. The vibe at those gigs was really chilled, but it was quite strange because we came offstage and it was like we hadn't had a break, but it was brilliant to get back.
Dunlop: You do notice those people when you're playing. Some nights, when you're having a bad night, you catch onto someone who's having a good time and they're your lifeline.

"Security! Get That Pretty Woman Off the Stage!"
groupie Primrose: It was weird to have Julia Roberts there. She was on the stage as well and told us she was a massive fan. We couldn't believe it. She was very nice and very, very charming.
Healy: She wandered in during the sound check, and we spoke, and it turned out she was a fan. I said to her, "Have you ever heard what it sounds like when you're on stage?" And she said, "No." So she stood behind the monitors for the whole song. Then she wanted her record signed. Weird.

feast Who Ate All the Pies?
Payne: It was the director's idea for the "Sing" video pie fight. That picture must've been taken quite early on in the shoot because Neil's quite clean, but Fran really caught that girl with a pie. The crust of a pie is a dangerous thing. I got cut under the eye by a rogue piece of pastry.
Dunlop: It took three days to do that video, and the first two days were quite controlled, but the final day was a free-for-all.

Ali "Is It Because I Is Scottish?"
Healy: We did "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?" I sang it, and over the top, he was saying [adopts Ali G voice], "Add a little bit of bass." I met him beforehand, and he was dressed as Ali G, but he was tlaking like Sacha Baron Cohen. He told me what he was going to say and what I had to come back with. It was all fixed.
